Wear and Thermal Processes in Asbestos-Reinforced Friction Materials

Abstract
In design it is useful to have equations for the prediction of the wear life of clutches and brakes, and to have coefficients and parameters for various materials and conditions. On the assumption that the surface temperature of the metal counterface, as induced by rubbing at various pressures and speeds is the variable that in fact controls wear rate, an equation is given for calculating average surface temperature, and an experimental verification is given. In addition the wear coefficients and exponents are given for five materials for the equation ΔW = KPavbtc.
