The midwife's role in community based medical education

Abstract
The opportunities for a community midwife to be involved in the education of clinical medical students is explored in an innovative community-based medical attachment. The intention of the obstetric experience is to offer students and pregnant women continuity through their antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care. This has been achieved. The community midwife is the chief provider and planner of the medical education. The innovation has been appreciated by students and is acceptable to most women. The opportunity to explore psycho-social as well as medical issues associated with pregnancy is valuable. The innovative nature of the course means that there are threats as well as opportunities associated with the initiative. There is a larger role for midwives in medical education which remains to be explored.
