Abstract
This paper, based on the official game statistics published from 1973 to 1980, shows the main features of the expansion and increase of the wild boar population in Spain. It also analyses some of the causes that have produced it. The demographic evolution of the wild boar population is expressed by a rate of annual density (graph. 1). To evaluate its demographic strength, we have used the observed growth rate r, the value of which (r = 0.089) shows a population increase of 204% throughout the period considered. As graphs 2 and 3 show, the wild boar expansion has taken place starting from a band that crosses the Peninsula in a southwesternly direction; this expansion affects the provinces with a smaller growth rate. The growth rate increases progressively towards provinces that are a longer way from the band. Finally, the causes of such spectacular expansion are pointed out (graph. 4). The social and economic changes that have taken place in the country since 1960 constitute the main ones. These changes have favored the recolonization of new areas by the species. However, we must exclude the most Southeastern and Northwestern areas of the Peninsula where that expansion has not yet come about. In the southeast, this is due, perhaps, to climatic conditions and to the kind or rural colonization. In the Northwest we point out the regulating role that the wolf can play. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
