Laser melt quenching and alloying

Abstract
The microstructure and topography of regions melted by a continuous wave carbon dioxide laser beam have been examined by a variety of metallographic and analytical techniques. Alloys studied include the nickel‐base superalloy Udimet 700 and Ag‐6.6 wt pct Cu crystals electroplated with Cu. Experimental results concerning convective processes that occur during melting, epitaxial regrowth and surface relief in the laser melted regions will be presented.
