Abstract
The effect of testosterone on atrophy of disuse in bone was investigated in animals of various known ages. Rats ranging from 3 weeks to 3 months of age were randomly assigned to control and experimental groups; the latter were injected with testosterone propionate to determine whether its influence was the same at all ages. In all animals atrophy of disuse was induced by neurectomy in one hind limb. In control animals the effect of neurectomy on femur weight and load at failure varied inversely with age. In experimental animals testosterone accentuated the effect of neurectomy in the youngest animals and reduced the effect in the oldest. Keywords
