THE EFFECT OF METHIONINE ON PROTEIN-DEFICIENT RATS EXPOSED TO BENZENE

Abstract
Rats fed diets con-taining 9% of protein, with and without a supplement of methionine, were exposed to 600 parts per million of benzene 40 hrs./wk. for 12 wks. The methionine supplements markedly increased the growth of rats whether they were ex-posed to benzene or not and it reduced the incidence of leuko-penia in the exposed rats. Comparisons indicated that de-crease in number of circulating leukocytes was a more sensi-tive indication of benzene poisoning than was retardation of growth.
