Response of Different Rice Varieties to Gibberellin1

Abstract
The response to gibberellin of 119 rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties, including some dwarf mutants, was studied. The japonica, indica and dwarf mutants showed a negative correlation between the lengths of their second leaf sheaths and their responses to gibberellin. No such correlation was obtained with the javanica varieties. There was a negative relationship between gibberellin response and culm length. Some short varieties, however, showed a low response to gibberellin, indicating that lack of endogenous gibberellin is not the only factor responsible for dwarfness.
