Abstract
By the kind permission of the Directors of the Newfoundland Land Company I am enabled to place before this Society the following notes on the mineralogy and geology of Newfoundland, which were collected whilst exploring in that country during the summer of 1873. The communication is generally unsystematic; more especially so is the portion referring to the mineral deposits, which are spoken of in the order in which they were visited. The geological characters of many of the places referred to having already been so thoroughly described by Mr. Murray in his reports on the geology of this island, or else remaining to form at some future period the subject of such reports, it is purposed in this communication to omit all that has already been written, and only to touch briefly on the remainder. My chief object, however, is simply to make known a number of facts which would be of use to explorers visiting Newfoundland.
