Abstract
There has been a growing interest in the U.S.A. in the self‐concept of the mentally retarded which has resulted in a considerable amount of research. In the United Kingdom there has been very little work done in this field and results, so far, contradict the American findings. This article looks at self concept, the evidence of research and questions some of the implications for the severely subnormal. Keywords
