Measurements of neutralization efficiency of a 50-keV He+ beam in a He gas cell

Abstract
Measurements of the power loading in some ion sources indicate that the gas inside the plasma generator of the ion sources is heated by energy and momentum exchange with the plasma ions. This hypothesis is tested by measuring the gas target thickness by the conversion of He+ beam ions to He0 by a neutralizer cell which is fed with gas from the plasma generator. The gas temperature can be derived directly from the measured gas target as the gas conductance is known. A control experiment is also made when the gas feed to the neutralizer is from an external supply.
