The Laboratory in the Study of Enterovirus Epidemics

Abstract
Two enterovirus epidemics were studied where multiple entero-viruses were being disseminated concurrently within the same population. In epidemics in Bermuda and Hawaii Group B Coxsackie, ECHO and polioviruses were related to human disease, but the clinical manifestations of infection differed in the two outbreaks. The factors which influence concurrent spread of multiple enteroviruses and which lead to varying clinical illnesses due to these agents are not understood, but mixed epidemics may provide a system in nature where these basic biologic factors can be investigated.
