Abstract
5-hydroxytrptamine was demonstrated in isolated purified mast cells obtained from the peritoneal cavity of the rat. The 5-hydroxytryptamine was identified by bloassay and paper chromatography. The concentration of this material in mast cells was found to be approximately 0.7 [mu]g/mm3 of cells. Material with identical characteristics was demonstrated in appropriate concentration in relation to mast cell volume in subcutaneous areolar tissue of rats. Certain implications of this finding are discussed. Keywords
