Abstract
An expression is derived for the first quantum correction to the second dielectric virial coefficient of interacting rare‐gas atoms. It is shown that this correction is not large enough to account for the experimently determined negative values of this quantity for helium and neon. Based on this result, along with a previously established argument, it is concluded that the point‐dipole approximation is the likely cause of the discrepancy between the theoretical and experimental results. Keywords
