Abstract
Insufficient documentation and analysis of subject characteristics in at risk and delayed infant samples impairs synthesis of research findings and determination of future studies. This article highlights some of the issues related to sample selection and definition. Examples of approaches found in the literature are provided, followed by a listing of alternatives that are available and advantages and disadvantages of each. Choice of alternatives must stem from theoretical preferences. In any event, whatever approach infancy researchers select, increased attention to the issue of sample description is warranted. Keywords
