Abstract
4 groups of 9 rats each were given 3 distinctive endbox conditions during training, but food was found in only one of these. In extinction, 1 group was run with only the formerly positive endbox, a 2nd group with only one of the formerly negative endboxes, a 3rd with both negative endboxes, and a 4th with both negative and the positive. Resistance to extinction increased in the order noted. Conclusion: resistance to extinction is a function of the maintenance of instrumental motivation.
