Abstract
Various hypotheses as to tobacco mosaic are mentioned. In this attempt, by Olitsky''s method, the medium was sap from healthy tomato shoots. The juice was diluted with distilled water, centrifuged, and rendered bacteria-free by passage through Berkefeld filters. After inoculating it with virus, successive transplants were made following a period of incubation. The infectious power of the cultures was ascertained by inoculation into living plants. No evidence was obtained of multiplication of the virus of tomato and tobacco mosaic outside of living plants.
