BENORYLATE VERSUS IBUPROFEN IN THE TREATMENT OF OSTEOARTHRITIS

Abstract
Benorylate tablets 4.5 g daily were compared with ibuprofen tablets 600 mg daily in the symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis over a two-week period. Both treatments conferred benefit equally in relief of pain at rest, but the relief of pain on using the joints was significantly better at day 14 in the benorylate group. When the patients' own assessments of general effectiveness of the treatments were analysed, there was a statistically significant response in the males in favour of benorylate. There was no difference between the two treatments in the females, but the initial overall severity of the disease was greater in the females in the benorylate group. Both drugs were well tolerated.
