Immediate Hypersensitivity in the Guinea Pig Conjunctiva

Abstract
An immediate hypersensitivity reaction in the conjunctiva of guinea pigs sensitised systemically to normal rabbit serum is described. The reaction could be demonstrated for at least as long as 116 days after primary sensitisation of the animals. Two types of homocytotropic antibodies were shown to be present in the sera of such sensitised guinea pigs. One was heat-labile and 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME)-sensitive, persisted in the skin of passively sensitised guinea pigs for at least 10 days, and was considered to be an IgE-like antibody. The other was heat-stable and 2-ME-stable, persisted in the skin of passively sensitised guinea pigs for at least 10 days, and was considered to be an IgG1 antibody. Passive systemic transfer of serum to normal guinea pigs showed that both these types of antibodies were capable of causing the immediate hypersensitivity reaction.
