Pertactin-Negative Variants of Bordetella pertussis in the United States

Abstract
In 12 B. pertussis isolates from children in Philadelphia, 11 were negative for the pertactin antigen that is a component of the acellular vaccine. Such variants may reflect selection pressure from the vaccine and may reduce its effectiveness for preventing whooping cough.Keywords
