Abstract
66 healthy elderly married people living in their own homes who formed a sub-sample of a randomly selected age-stratified parent sample of 300 subjects, aged 65–89, were interviewed with regard to their attitudes towards their marriages and sexual lives. It was found that the majority found comfort in a satisfactory marriage, and slept in the same room although there was some tendency to adopt separate rooms and separate beds in later life. 39 of the 66 stated that they were no longer sexually intimate and the vast majority agreed that the frequency of intercourse lessened with age and had reduced need for it. 63 out of the 66 considered themselves in good/fair health. Keywords
