Abstract
Carotene was found rather widely distributed in the fat-soluble pigments of various aerobic bacterial spp. Orange, but not lemon-yellow, spp. generally contained it, together with other carotenoids. Carotene was not found in any strictly anaerobic type. The highest yields were encountered among the Corynebacteria and Mycobacteria; 0.58 mgm. per gm. of dry cells was obtained with one organism. Carotene synthesis was observed on synthetic media; the amt. produced varied with age of organisms and with medium. This publication has 11 references indexed in Scilit:
