Protection of E. Coli in Montmorillonite in Seawater

Abstract
Increasing pollution of marine estuaries from sewage outfalls has led to intensive research on the mechanisms of decline in enteric microorganisms in the sea. The purpose of this investigation was to demonstrate the effect of colloidal material, such as montmorillonite, on the decline of Escherichia coli in natural seawater. The data show that colloids protect coliforms by adsorbing them. Therefore, in waters containing even small amounts of clays, it is advisable to carry out a parallel analysis of the clay particles to determine concentrations of coliforms adsorbed on the clay particles.
