Abstract
Heart-lung machines now used for cardiac surgery should be considered for use as an extended form of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in selected patients. Of eight patients in whom cardiac arrest had proved refractory to open- or closed-heart cardiac massage, all but one were resuscitated and survived hours to days. One patient recovered completely. Keywords
