Abstract
The effects of the pseudotetragonal symmetry on the nonlinear optical properties of beta -Gd2(MoO4)3 and beta -Tb2(MoO4)3 are discussed. The empirical nonlinear optical polarizability of the Mo-O bond is found to be large, indicating that other molybdates with more favourable geometric arrangements may have large second harmonic generation coefficients. Keywords
