Abstract
The higher band, >or approximately=60000 cm-1, observed by Sabatini, Salwin and McClure (1975) and Chase and McClure (1976) in the vacuum ultraviolet absorption spectra of divalent transition metal ions in fluorides is attributed to the 3d to 4p spin-allowed transitions. The interpretation is based on three characteristics: larger oscillator strength, low-temperature absorption enhancement and good correlation with the corresponding free-ion data. Keywords
