Temperature dependence of the structure factor S(Q) of liquid-like ordered colloidal dispersions

Abstract
A liquid‐like ordered polystyrene latex suspension of particle diameter σ=109 nm and concentration ρ=1.62×1018 particles/m3 was investigated via its light scattering structure factor S(Q) in the temperature range from 21 to 70 °C. Contrary to previous investigations we did not find a rapid collapse of the liquid‐like structure at higher temperature. Comparison of the experimental S(Q) with structure factors derived in the rescaled mean spherical approximation (RMSA) of Hansen and Hayter indicates that the experimental S(Q) at 70 °C are slightly less structured than predicted by the model. With the assumption of an extra ionic strength at 70 °C of I=1.0×106 mol/l due to impurities the experimental S(Q) can well be rationalized in terms of the RMSA liquid model.
