Fusion splicing of optical fibres

Abstract

A portable optical-fibre field fusion-splicing set has been designed and tested. The equipment includes the provision of a protective package over the completed splice. Average insertion losses of 0.2 dB were achieved with a 75 μm core-diameter graded-index fibre.
