Abstract
The Afro-Asiatic genus Lindenbergia Lehm. (Scrophulariaceae) is revised and 12 species are recognized. The position of the genus within the Scrophulariaceae is analysed, and it is concluded that Lindenbergia belongs in the tribe Gratioleae. Morphological aspects of the genus are discussed and a cladistic analysis including all species is presented. The somatic chromosome number 2n = 32 is reported for three species. Biogeographical matters are briefly discussed and distribution maps for all species are presented. Two new species are described: L. awashensis Hjertson from central Ethiopia and L. serpyllifolia Hjertson from north-eastern Somalia. A key and descriptions are provided for all species. Several lecto- and neotypes are selected and several names are placed in synonymy.
