Vibration of Locomotive Driving Wheels Caused by Unbalance

Abstract
Results of road service tests on steam locomotives are presented to show the influence of unbalance in driving wheels in causing vibrations of the wheel on the rail. These results are accompanied by a correlated theoretical study of conditions under which these vibrations occur. A method is given for eliminating such vibrations based on test results. The effect of unbalance and weight of reciprocating parts is also discussed relative to the track and locomotive.
