Abstract
The amount of stress within an individual (Factor A) plus the amount of stress from the environment (Factor B) determines an individual''s level of discomfort (LD). This level of discomfort subsequently is an accurate predictor of drug abuse. Previous studies have dealt with the quantification of Factor A (internal stress) using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). An attempt was made to quantity Factor B (external stress) using Rahe''s Recent Life Changes Questionnaire (RLCQ). Data was collected from 121 soldiers from various USA Army troop units in the Nuernberg [West Germany] area. Factors A and B were found to be separate measures and Factor B, either alone or in combination with Factor A correlated with excessive drug use. Keywords
