The Surgical Pathology of Rectal Cancer

Abstract
The paper gives the statistical results of surgical treatment of carcinoma of the rectum by abdominoperineal excision or by perineal excision in 716 patients who survived the operation between 1928 and 1941. Of these 47.1% survived the operation for more than 5 yrs. The cases are divided into 3 classes in class A the growth is confined to the bowel and there are no metastases. In class B there is local spread but no metastases at the time of operation. Of the patients treated by combined abdomino-perineal excision 84.8% of class A survived for 5 years and of Class B 63.9% survived for 5 yrs., and of class C 33.3% survived for 5 yrs. Similar figures are given for the patients treated by perineal excision alone.
