Estimation of lactic acid in biological material by oxidation with ceric sulphate

Abstract
Lactic acid is oxidised by ceric sulphate in acid soln. according to the equation [image]The reaction proceeds rapidly to completion at 50[degree] and is made the basis of a method for lactic acid estimations in biological material, the acetaldehyde being absorbed by Na bisulphite and estimated iodimetrically. The estimation is carried out in the presence of substances commonly occurring in biological material, e.g., glucose or malic acid, and no preliminary treatment other than precipitation of protein by trichloroacetic acid is required. The method is applicable to the estimation of lactic acid in blood, cerebro-spinal fluid, urine, and tissue brei.
