The Genetics of an Alcohol Dehydrogenase in the Mosquito Anopheles Stephens1

Abstract
Elretrophoretic variants of alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh) in Anopheles stephensi are described. Three variants have been uncovered from mosquitoes originating in Pakistan. Genetic experiments indicate that the variants are codominant alleles at a single locus. The Adh locus is apparently on one of the autosomes as no evidence of sex linkage could be found. Substrate specificity tests suggest that the enzyme has a relatively low specificity among the straight chain, primary alcohols.
