Abstract

The pion double-charge-exchange reaction

{}^{18}O (π^{+}, π^{-}) {}^{18}{Ne}

has been observed. A value of

(\frac{d σ}{d Ω}) (0 °) = 1.78 \pm 0.30

μb/sr was obtained at a pion energy of 139 MeV for the

Δ T_{z} = 2

isobaric analog transition from the ground state of oxygen-18 to the ground state of neon-18.
