Abstract
A brief review of the knowledge of the occurrence, distribution and chemistry of hemicelluloses in higher plants, with particular reference to hemicellulose in apple tissues. The apparent function of these compounds in plant metabolism; their role as storage materials along with sugars and starches; and the methods used in determining this fraction in plant tissues, are discussed. Recent researches are cited concerning the probable close relationship between pectins and hemicelluloses. Keywords
