Perceived Risk and Elderly Perceptions of Generic Drug Prescribing

Abstract
Despite proposals by many official agencies for generic drug prescription to limit rising health care costs, general acceptance to date has been disappointing. This article explores differences in the perceptions of the risks involved in generic prescribing and dispensing between elderly drug users and a comparison group of other consumers. Results indicate that the elderly, frequently the heaviest users of drugs, are concerned about financial losses and generally perceive substantially more risk than other consumers. Consequently, they may be particularly reluctant to support generic practices as a cost-saving device.
