Abstract
Three manta rays were seen and photographed in the western Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, in March 1968. Although the species or genus could not be identified, this sighting represents the first substantiated record of the manta ray family (Mobulidae) in New Zealand and confirms the statements of fishermen that, in summer, mantas occasionally appear in offshore game‐fish waters in north‐eastern New Zealand. Keywords
