Abstract
Ih bovine adenohypophyses (embryos, fetuses and adults of various ages) the production of GH was investigated by the fluorescent antibody method. As in humans, it was found that the cells responsible are the acidophils. Growth hormone production was earliest demonstrable in fetuses of 18 cm, that is at about the 3rd month of pregnancy, and increased rapidly thereafter. By the adult stage, the nonfluorescent acidophils had become predominant; these are probably "resting" cells and the change represents the end of somatic growth.
