Towards increased regional specialization? The quantitative importance of new industrial spaces in Norway, 1970– 1990

Abstract
According to several researchers, a regional concentration in the manufacturing industry has taken place in Western Europe and North America since the 1970s. This concentration is due to the growth of specialized industrial agglomerations: regionally concentrated networks of mainly small and medium-sized firms. The assertion is based mainly on case studies of various industrial agglomerations. In this article we attempt, by means of extensive statistical material, to chart the extent of different types of specialized industrial agglomerations in Norway in 1990, as well as to study employment trends in the specialized industrial agglomerations between 1970 and 1990. This kind of quantitative analysis can supplement results from the case studies.
