Abstract
Larvae of Carpocapsa pomonella (L.) in diapause and active development were examined for differentiating characteristics. Diapause is characterized by testes 14 the size of those in developing larvae, cessation of gametogenesis, degeneration of spermatids, reduction in oxygen consumption, reduction in cytoplasm of midgut epithelium, reduction of mitochondrial activity in the fat body, and construction of a thick-walled, circular cocoon. Breaking diapause resulted in the reactivation of gametogenesis, partial restoration of oxygen consumption, partial resumption of mitochondrial activity in the fat body, and the reconstruction or remodeling of the cocoon in preparation for the pupal molt.
