Abstract
Energy metabolism was evaluated by closed-circuit indirect calorimetry during systematically graded gravitational stresses. The subjects were held on a tilting table at angles between the horizontal and vertical, suspended in a tank of water to nullify the effect of gravity, and during the maintenance of supported and unsupported standing postures. 7 young adult [female][female] served as subjects. Under strictly basal conditions 95.9% of 269 5-min. detns. of basal O2 consumption fell within [plus or minus] 20 cc. ([plus or minus] 10%) of the mean. The O2 consumption during the exptl. conditions did not significantly exceed the limits of variability observed under conditions of rest. The data argue against current concepts that relate fatigue of standing to energy cost. This publication has 7 references indexed in Scilit:
