Radioguidance Is Not Necessary During Parathyroidectomy

Abstract
OVER THE LAST decade, minimally invasive, or "targeted," parathyroidectomy has gained acceptance among many endocrine surgeons. Several factors have contributed to the development of these focused surgical techniques, such as improved preoperative localization with high-resolution ultrasonography and/or technetium Tc 99m sestamibi scintigraphy, the availability of intraoperative monitoring of the parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, and more recently, the use of nuclear mapping during surgery. These advances have permitted the use of a targeted approach while the patient is under local anesthesia and the development of video-assisted and complete endoscopic techniques.1-4
