Abstract
In the course of a statistical review by the Food and Drug Administration of our study of GM-1 ganglioside for spinal-cord injury (June 27 issue),* Jonathan Levine identified an error in the presentation of American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) score results. The adjusted difference in improvement between the placebo and GM-1 groups (mean [±SD], 11.5±5.6; P = 0.047) was inadvertently reported in Table 5 of our article as based on the total ASIA score (the score for both the lower and upper extremities), when in fact it was based on the score for the lower extremities alone (which represents a post hoc analysis of improvement in neurologic recovery through the site of injury). The adjusted difference between the two treatment groups in the improvement in the total ASIA score was not statistically significant (9.7±8.8; P = 0.279). Table 5 requires revision as shown in Table 1 here. For clarity, we have included both adjusted and unadjusted mean differences between treatment groups in improvement in both the total scores and those for the lower extremities. This correction also affects numbers in the Results section of the abstract, the last paragraph on page 1834, and the 14th line of the first column on page 1837, all of which should concur with the corrected Table 5 ( Table 1 here). The lower half of Table 5, the Results section of the text, and Figure 4 did indicate that the beneficial effect in patients with cervical injuries was evident only in the lower extremities. This correction does not alter our conclusions as published. We thank Mr. Levine, and we regret the error. Keywords
