Abstract
It is demonstrated that for the relativistic magnetron, an effective mass m∗/mo anisotropy arises in the cyclotron frequency similar to the cyclotron resonance phenomenon in semiconductors ; values greater than or less than unity occur, with an anisotropy governed by the direction and magnitude of the particle injection velocity υ0 and the ratio of the electric and magnetic fields E/H. A special type of motion manifests itself for injection at 90° to E when E/H=υ/C and E⊥H, which is associated with a suigular solution for the trajectory. The cut-off relation is deduced for the cylindrical magnetron and the behaviour in the high energy limit found to be essentially different from the planar case with the cut-off voltage having an asymptotic value prescribed by the electron rest energy. Keywords
