Abstract
An attempt is made to classify the newly discovered heavy mesons into broken SU(3)′×SU(3)″ (color) multiplets. Mass formulas and decay properties are discussed in connection with a suggestive scheme of symmetry breaking. The model leads to numerous predictions which will soon allow it to be substantiated or rejected on the basis of experiment. One of them is the existence of a broad resonance at ≃ 4.8 GeV in the photon channel. From presently known experimental data or theoretical considerations no stringent objections arise; on the contrary, several facts do favor this approach. Keywords
