Abstract
Peritoneal adhesion formation following injury and polyethylene implantation has been studied in rabbits and rats. The incidence of adhesion formation in rats was high whereas in rabbits it was negligible, suggesting a species difference rather than a specific action of polyethylene. These findings were associated with an absence of mast cells in the wound areas in the 1st 3 post-operative days and the presence of large numbers at 4 and 5 days particularly in the areas of adhesion formation. There may be a relationship between the mast cell population and the incidence of adhesion formation in the peritoneal cavities of the rat and rabbit. Keywords
