Abstract
The equivalence between the frequency-dependent susceptibility obtained by coupling an oscillator linearly to some relaxation process and by utilizing the notion of generalized damping discussed by Mori is pointed out. The effect of such coupling or generalized damping on lattice absorption and reflectivity is examined. Keywords
