New biconically tapered fibre star coupler: structure and fabrication

Abstract
A new biconically tapered fibre star coupler has been developed. This coupler has a biconically tapered fibre bundle inserted within a quartz tube. This fibre bundle is obtained by heating the tube. The insertion loss for this coupler has been found to be approximately log10n for input/output fibre port number n. Reproducibility and stability have been improved through the new method of manufacture.
