Abstract
Experiments on the extraction of intense d.c. H− beams have been carried out on a volume source with a triode accelerator. The maximum beam currents so far obtained have been 145 mA at 83 keV and 126 mA at 89 keV. An estimate of the fraction of this beam which is composed of electrons has been made and found to be 6%. A study has also been carried out on the effect of the first gap voltage of the accelerator on the extraction of a beam and a model of the extraction physics is proposed. Keywords
