Abstract
A number of clinicians have reported cases of major depression associated with smoking cessation. We report here a case of major depression in a 27‐year‐old woman who abruptly reduced cigarette consumption from 35 to 8 cigarettes per day during the baseline period. A multi‐component behavioural programme was applied to stop smoking, together with pharmacotherapy and Beck's cognitive therapy for depression. Twelve months after ending treatment, the patient was still abstaining from smoking, and she showed no signs of depressive symptomatology. Keywords
